Broken Sword – Part 5

In today’s article, we’re going to look at the fifth installment in the Broken Broken Sword series. In contrast to parts three and four, a two-dimensional world in cartoon style was used here again – classic point and click. But does the game convince in terms of content?

I have already anticipated the first realization. The 3D animations and mechanics of the two predecessors have been revised again, we’re playing in 2D again. While I didn’t find the other option too bad, I definitely do better with a flat world. It just has more of the point and click flair for me.

No ten seconds pass without a corpse appearing next to me

But that’s just personal opinion, are there any “measurable” differences? That’s an easy answer: yes! The fixed camera in particular often caused problems in the two predecessors; even if the camera is now technically fixed again – there is hardly a perspective that hides something important from us. Ironically, though, they still managed to fit one in.

They managed to hide an important information in this scene. Kudos!

We’ve discussed the mechanics themselves often enough. The controls work well and are tried and tested, the graphics look nice and the game doesn’t lag. Personally, I particularly like the cartoon-like look and it gives the game back the brightness it lost in the darker parts three and four. It gives me a warmer, nicer feeling to play and puzzle. Of course, this is again subjective. The characters are drawn in great detail and look great.

Bright, vibrant colors – I love that

But let’s get to the heart of the matter: the story and the puzzles. And I can draw a positive conclusion. You don’t have to push a single crate and you deal with creative solutions to ordinary problems. There were one or two puzzles that I didn’t quite like (e.g. the decryption puzzle), all the others were more or less obvious but still very fun to solve. And when I was completely lost, the chat quickly came to the rescue.

This puzzle is solved by trial and error – not my favorite

I was also very impressed by the story. I don’t want to say anything about the ending, unfortunately it wasn’t quite as epic as I had hoped. But basically Christian faith is interpreted again and connected with reality with a bit of mythology. I always say how much I love stories like this, and again, the premise didn’t disappoint. Lots of nice and interesting ideas – as I said, I would have only wished for the finale to be more epic.

Goodness gracious!

Overall I can say that I really like the game. It is definitely a recommendation. I would just skip parts three and four, I thoroughly enjoyed the remaining three parts. I hope that maybe another part will release some day. But then please again in the style of part five!

Maybe God almighty brings us a new part
